HIRA, construct & release research clinical data set for COVID-19 patients

- As the first COVID-19 relevant data release, promote cooperation research with global experts -

 

 To response effectively toward global spread of COVID-19 crisis, Health Insurance Review & Assessment service and the Ministry of Health and Welfare jointly release nationwide COVID-19 patient’s de-identified data and do cooperation research together with the most prestigious academies and government organizations.

 Based on Korea’s National Health Insurance System, high quality real-world clinical data collected by active testing and confirmed patients management are constructed as cohort data and then result value is shared without the data export.

 Because raw data are owned in the organization so that cohort data are managed by result value sharing method with implementing analysis code without personal information leakage.

 This research will be done backed by national medical fee claims data owned by HIRA. As standardizing Electronic Medical Record (EMR) from private medical institutions and clinical data from foreign countries, it is utilized in the research participating with clinical experts relevant to infectious disease from home and abroad and data scientists.

 Under the circumstances fighting against COVID-19, the international mutual network is the first case as the format of public data to researchers all over the world with urgently collecting·refining data.

 Through various analyses utilizing collectable real-clinical data under the present condition, the data helps physicians makeb decisions for treatment in clinical field and it is also used for the purpose of supporting government’s policy making such as medical resources’ appropriate distribution.

 

 HIRA President Seung-taik Kim said that the recent novel infectious disease shows unpredictable spread trend beyond region and border, so that it is critical that the global society shows intelligence of rapid response to the COVID-19 with Distributed Research Network (DRN).

 Especially, the president added that the network will serve as a test bed for creating new value of healthcare field and delivering the benefit to humankind with applying advanced big-data analysis technology in the 4th industrial revolution.
