The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA), led by President Kang Jung-Gu, ran the session - Future policies for appropriate use of antibiotics - co-hosted by the KSID in Lahan Select Gyeongju on the 8th.
Extending an invitation to Dr.Benedikt David HUTTNER of the Prevention and Control, Antimicrobial Resistance Division of the World Health Organization (WHO), the HIRA marshalled professional forces of the WHO, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDA), the HIRA, and Clinical Practice Expert Panel (CPEP) and it held a fruitful discussion on the international trend, domestic status, and future strategy with regard to antimicrobial resistance and utilization management.
This session is composed of 4 separate topics: global strategy of appropriate use of antimicrobials (by Dr.HUTTNER of the WHO); antimicrobial resistance management policy in Korea (by the KCDA); the status of appropriate use of antimicrobials and suggestion of relevant policies after taking national action on the management policy (2016 to 2023) (by the HIRA); and the outcomes and future tasks of Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) (by Korea University).
Dr.HUTTNER put emphasis on the significance of appropriate use of antimicrobials to control their resistance, presenting the classification of Access, Watch, and Reserve (AWaRe) of the WHO as a way of management.
Manager of Division of Antimicrobial Resistance Control of the KCDA explained the main progress of national action on antimicrobial resistance control; government-driven multidisciplinary cooperation at home and abroad to tackle the resistance issue.
Director of Pharmaceutical Policy Research Division made use of national health claim data to share the analysis result of the domestic antimicrobial use status, management of antimicrobial appropriate use, and stewardship-oriented activities with experts in the presence.
A professor of Korea University uttered his thoughts on stewardship activities being crucial of antimicrobial resistance and use management, emphasizing the importance of financial incentives, standardized quality indicators, training program, and other supportive measures.
This event was chaired by Mr. Kim Hong-bin, putting forth the idea that with shared insights of WHO’s AWaRe classification, the analysis result of national antimicrobial use, actions on antimicrobial resistance in Korea, leveraged by a new pilot project (stewardship) this year for the sake of antimicrobial appropriate use, clinical fields will improve.
“It is imperative that antimicrobial resistance control will be mainly buttressed by medical institutions’stewardship, followed by multi-sectors, multi-agencies, and international cooperation,”stressed Director General of Health Insurance Review and Assessment Research Department of the HIRA, adding “Utilizing health insurance claim data pushfully, the HIRA remains committed to upgrading pertinent discussions on and regulations of the control.”
