HIRA Hosting 2025 Global Training Program

- Thirty-six healthcare experts from ten countries-such as Asia and Africa-gaining field-based live training -

The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA), led by President Kang Jung-gu, convened the 2025 HIRA Global Training Program from Monday, May 19 to Friday, May 23, 2025, for five days at the conference hall of the Wonju Headquarters.

This year marking the 13th anniversary of the global program, it has served since its inception in 2013 as a platform to share experiences and insights into healthcare expenditure management and Korean NHI system operation with healthcare professionals of developing countries.

In this 2025 training course, HIRA and the Korea Foundation for International Health (KOFIH) co-planned the curricula not only to elevate the level of grasping the healthcare system in Korea and HIRA’s roles and functions but to devise a practical field-based training program, thereby focusing more on lectures with lively discussions and presentations, and tours of public health centers, rather than providing passive lecture style, with a view to stimulating active engagement.

This program was joined by thirty-six healthcare experts from ten countries including Asia and Africa who were made up of Dr. Lee Jong-wook Fellowship trainees under the KOFIH and healthcare professionals endorsed by the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WPRO).

Lectures laid emphasis on reimbursement review, HIRA’s ICT system and a claims review portal (HIRA+), benefit listing and pricing management, quality assessment of medical service, and big data management and analysis.

Also noteworthy, the program invited an expert of WPRO to provide a special lecture on universal health coverage (UHC) fund management know-how in addition to lectures on global healthcare trend-digital transition and AI. On day 5, discussion and presentation sessions on participating country-specific healthcare issues took place with the goal of enhancing mutual understanding through comparison and debates on various healthcare systems by country.

“Healthcare experts worldwide has had growing interest in acquiring HIRA’s experiences and know-how to prop up UHC initiative,” said Ms. Chung Seol-hee, director general of the international cooperation department of HIRA. “I hope that this 2025 global program will be of great help to build and advance a better healthcare system across the world.”

HIRA was designated by World Health Organization (WHO) as WHO Collaborating Centre for Strategic Purchasing (WHO) on December 2021 and this program was organized as part of the initiatives undertaken by the WHO collaborating Centre.
